cross-eyed young boyStrabismus is a condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned to each other. It not treated, strabismus can cause vision impairment.

Here are some risk factors for the strabismus : heredity, premature birth, eye diseases…

Since some eye diseases can cause strabismus, an eye exam is essential. It is also important to act on strabismus as soon as possible as the vision problems caused by strabismus can be fixed only during childhood.

eye examinationCataract is the clouding of the natural lens of your eye, essential in the transmission of the image to the brain. As the lens gets cloudy, the image you see will be blurred. Your vision will be impaired and can interfere with your usual activities.

The only way to treat cataract is a surgery replacing the cloudy lens. Fortunately, cataract surgery is generally a safe, effective and common procedure.

The good news is that the surgery can fix other eye conditions such as myopia, hypermetropia…

Please remember that regular eye exam is important to evaluate your vision but also to detect any kind of problem that can damage your vision.

The day after the surgeryBlepharoplasty, also called eye lift or eyelid surgery, reduces bagginess from lower eyelids and/or removes excess skin from upper eyelids. It doesn’t act on dark circles under the eyes or crow’s feet, but it can smooth the appearance of under-eye bags or puffiness.

This surgery is often performed for cosmetic reasons but can also improve sight in old people whose droopy upper eyelids get in the way of their vision.

Blepharoplasty allows you to give away the “excess bagage” from your eyes and get an younger look.

Stop Glaucoma Texts on Pale Bare HandGlaucoma is a really tricky eye disease. It acts on the optic nerve in combination with eye pressure, causing damages to the nerve fibers. When a significant number of fibers are damaged, permanent blind spots develop and cause the gradual shrinking of the field of vision. The problem is that people don’t notice the blind areas until much of the optic nerve damage has already occurred and once it has occurred, it is impossible to recover a normal vision. If not detected, glaucoma can lead to blindness.

This is why glaucoma detection is so important. Regular eye examinations by your ophthalmologist is the best way to detect glaucoma, especially if you meet one or more of these factor risks :

– People over the age of 40

– People who have a family history of glaucoma

– People with abnormally high intraocular pressure

– People with diabetes, previous eye injury…

In order to detect glaucoma, the ophthalmologist will check your intraocular pressure with a safe and painless procedure called tonometry. After instilling a drop of anaesthetic in each eye, the doctor puts a luminescent cone in front of the eyes (one after the other) to check the intraocular pressure.

Remember : early detection is the only way to avoid damaged vision from glaucoma.

stopglaucoma2Once the disease has been detected early, the glaucoma treatment can prevent loss of vision. But this is a lifetime treatment since the glaucoma cannot be cured, even after an operation.

Your ophthalmologist will adapt your treatment to your situation. There are three ways to treat a glaucoma, that can be combined :

–  eye drops to instil every day at the same hour.

–  laser surgery, useful to lower the intraocular pressure without invasive procedure. The effect is limited in time (2 or 3 years).

– traditional surgery (local anaesthesia) : either trabeculectomy or non-penetrating deep sclerectomy. It is performed in order to evacuate the extra amount of aqueous humor causing an increase in intraocular pressure.

Please remember that it is important to take your medications exactly as prescribed if you are to control your eye pressure. The regularity is essential in glaucoma treatment.

Oogartsen praktij/Cabinet d'ophtalmologieEye exam is important to evaluate your vision but also to detect any kind of problem that can damage your vision (glaucoma, cataract…)

Since some damage can be irreversible, let your ophthalmologist perform a complete eye exam on a regular basis.

Before any surgery, we make a complete and thorough exam of the eye but also of the patient. Nothing is left aside.

Obsessed with your wrinkles? Don’t want to go on cosmetic surgery? Maybe you should try the botulinum toxin injections, performed in safe conditions by our specialists in our medical center.

The botulinum toxin can be injected into human in really small concentrations. It removes wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles for the wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is efficient on frown lines, crow’s feet…

The effects of the injections are not permanent, they last several months. You have to repeat the treatment on a regular basis to keep away from the wrinkles.
